Peterson Reference Guide to Bird Behavior, by John Kricher — a review

10,000 Birds

isn’t “behavior” synonymous with “life” itself; isn’t the title of David Allen Sibley’s 2001 tome (also encyclopedic, also delightful), The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, redundant? Other than purely physical things (e.g., feathers, nictating membranes, muscular cloacae, etc.), Maybe, maybe not. One or the other.

A review of the birdcentric novel “Accidentals” (the title of which is in the plural for a reason)

10,000 Birds

In Gaines’ first novel Carbon Dreams (2001) the science (there, geology) tended to overwhelm the story, but in Accidentals, she incorporates ornithology and microbiology skillfully into a well-woven whole. Yes, that’s right – she adds an epilogue. And then, apparently not willing to leave well enough alone, she ruins it.

No two scaups are equal

10,000 Birds

A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). There were three of us and in order to make the most out of a short winter day, we were all assigned different roles. And I saw them. I felt… I felt like a tourist.

The slaughter tourism trade in Serbia

10,000 Birds

The scale of massacres is such that in 2001 the Italian customs found 120,702 dead birds from Serbia in just one lorry. Too little, too late – yes; but still a step in the right direction. You guessed it right – the hunting lobby used their influence for political pressures. Then comes summer and the birds start migrating.

Good News for the Alamagordo Chimps!

Critter News

This gives animal rights activists some time to prepare further defense of the animals. The chimps have been free from testing at the Alamogordo Primate Facility at Holloman Air Force Base since 2001. I received an alert from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Good way to end 2010. ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP)
