Light broke and after Couch’s Kingbird I spotted my 2000 th lifer: Crimson-collared Grosbeak. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. These parrots breed inside cavities in cliffs and they are very particular about the cliff. A very good celebratory bird. It was amazing.

Each year the Sanderling depart from Australia and head north to Siberia to breed and then return to be observed running frantically along the water’s edge. Earlier this year when we were in the south of Western Australia adding numerous bird species to our 2018 year list we encountered a small flock of Sanderling.

It has recently been reclassified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List; this category is reserved for only the most threatened species in the world. It has not been seen in its small home range in central Vietnam since around 2000. Conservationists searched intensively in 2011 but found none.

Many may find the inclusion of the Osprey into a post on German eagles odd, but the German name of the Osprey translates to “Fish Eagle”, and German birders would find it self-evident to include the species here. Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

A few metres further, something is jumping from one branch to another… a pair of Subalpine Warblers , a Mediterranean species that does not go much further north than this. There are a few spots where entering the heronry is allowed and the birds breeding in that section seem to be habituated to the visits.

Since discovering our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 we have observed the breeding of these local shorebirds along the coast between Gantheaume Point in the south and Willie Creek in the north, which is a distance of 23 kilometres. It breeds in Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard and overwinters (singly and at mountain top hot springs – if Hollywood is to be trusted) along the coasts of northern Europe. In my native Serbia, I’ve observed this species in winter only once, while here in East Anglia every site held one. Nearby Cantley Marshes were the next stop.
