I stitched away as I watched the Red-bellied Woodpecker scatter the smaller Chipping Sparrows and Carolina Chickadees as it glided down for a few seed morsels. Most of them were pretty good in the Owl-Duck-Pigeon range, but they got bogged down when trying to make the leap from a study skin to a particular page of the field guide for, say, a blackbird or a sparrow. Knowing what a sparrow is is kind of easy. And that frustration was epic. Which I think is rather key.

Olive Sparrow, Rufous-capped Warbler, Banded Wrens, Olivaceous Woodcreeper , and several flycatchers all made it into the list along with several migrants. Out in the fields, Double-striped Thick-knees called, two species of caracaras flopped around, and a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was content with its Texas-like surroundings.

Why do Lark Sparrows always show up in September in Miami and then vanish? Lark Sparrow is one of many western species that regularly migrates through or winters in South Florida in small numbers. There are two invasive human commensals (a House Sparrow and a Rock Pigeon), two fully-domesticated fowl (both a rooster and a hen), one introduced gamebird (a partridge), and a penguin I didn’t identify but which seems to have been added mostly for a little wildcard variety.
