About four years ago I first wrote about the Pink-headed Duck , a charming species related to the pochards (although how, exactly, is up for grabs, like so much duck taxonomy.) Maybe they’re extinct. Maybe they’re not. Presumably, only the swamps and reedy rivers of Myanmar hold the answer.

At this time of year in Broome there are often Swinhoe’s Snipe present at the Poo Ponds, but they are elusive and they did not make it onto my 2013 list. I did have the pleasure of finding a Latham’s Snipe in Queensland on February 14th 2013, though and a pair of Painted Snipe near Broome on August 4th 2013.

I am preparing for the new census of one of the rarest birds of Serbia, the globally threatened Great Bustard , taking place two days from now. Together with African Kori Bustard (which I observed on a camping trip in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve), this is the heaviest flying bird in the world. m–8 ft 10 in).

After enjoying dawn on the Rupununi we headed to the remote village of Karasabai just on the border with Brazil to search for these spectacularly vivid parakeets within a few shallow valleys. After lunch, we continued our search, this time at the banks of a river where a resident family assured us that the birds passed through regularly.

So, when searching records, we noticed a lack of eBird reports in Senegal and The Gambia. Then off in search of the main event! After a day of searching out lizards, rodents, and bugs, they overnight in humongous baobab trees along this stretch of river. eBird is a huge help with that.

Disinterested Gray Langurs await us in the next tree crown; one Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker is searching the branches, while one gorgeous Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher flies by. Several Indian Peafowl are searching dry leaves by the roadside. On the low acacia by the road, a Shikra keeps a watchful eye on us.

Typically we have always stopped off at the first corner and walked around a few bends, searching the dense foliage for anything accommodating. The call of a Squirrel Cuckoo got me searching in the highest branches of some large trees nearby. I remember going searching for migratory warblers many years ago and only getting poor views.

My daughter and I visited Owl Woods in search of winter finches but were surprised to find owls instead; obviously, the name of this legendary birding site suggests otherwise, but encountering both a Saw-whet and Barred Owl on the same autumn day was both unexpected and thrilling.
