Most days, that seemingly random place is right at home. In the erstwhile sanctuary, common species like Red-billed Pigeon , Blue-black Grassquit , and Rufous-collared Sparrow abound. Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view.

I’m no expert, but I strongly suspect Rusty Sparrows only hunt for grubs when they are feeding babies. They look different when the right light catches them from the front. And yet, nesting continues: The following photos, both from the area of La Escalera, suggest that the nesting season is not yet over for our locals.

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. Seaside Sparrow. I imagined walking right up to them. High Island in April requires Weather, so I was told.

Where can I see Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow followed by a fantastic meal ? Solitary, naturally sparse, and stealthy, these deadly mini-stalkers are rarely seen and can catch and escape with a tanager right under your birding nose (once, while birding with 10 people, I was the only person who saw one fly off with a tanager).

That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Unfortunately, the world cares little for weavers, no matter how rare or range-restricted. The mighty Shoebill.
