Are contractors the urban equivalent of woodpeckers? A lot of nature photographers try to exclude human made elements but I think the porta potty kind of makes the photo. Ever present Brewer’s Blackbirds and Common Ravens interrupted her mellow park-side life by mobbing her whenever she got too close for comfort.

My personal favorites are the images that show the relationships that are at the heart of this book–a Linneated Woodpecker perched opposite a bromeliad on an exposed tree, Azteca ants on a cecropia tree whose decaying parts provide food, and, a little distressingly, two Capuchin Monkeys feeding on a Toucan (thanks to James Adams).

While it is laudable to point out the plight of homeless woodpeckers, this is hardly the right subject for an upbeat bird photo contest. That is an easy trick – capture a bird in a seemingly human pose, just to attract sympathy for the bird. Every bird photo should tell a story, not just show a bird.

If enough trees are present, Blue Jay and Red-bellied Woodpecker become distinct possibilities. In southeast Florida, it thrives in man-made habitats, feeding on grassy meridians, on roadsides, and even among human refuse. Shopping mall parking lots even show a degree of seasonality in Miami-Dade.

Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. Her writing is based on keen observation of animal and human behavior, and she likes to interweave solid natural history information with larger philosophical themes to challenge and inspire the reader.
