Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people.

In a soft release, you let the bird you’ve raised go but continue to provide food until they choose to be independent.) Even though I hand raised her from a baby, she was very wild so this was no easy task. I put her in a cage, gave her Metacam for pain, and administered herbal Rescue Remedy to calm her down.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.

A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. She was rescued, put back into her crate, and returned to the Raptor Trust. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself. She deserved her freedom. She deserved to retire in comfort and luxury. A second try produced the same result.
