At least one birder will now likely grab his war hammer and check flight availabilities from New York to Frankfurt as well as average prison sentences in Germany for first degree murder. Jacob suggested the Wagbachniederung, a well-known wetland that is particularly popular amongst photographers for being one of the few locations in Germany where Purple Herons breed. We still focused on the birds of course and saw quite a good number of species, although few were unexpected.

Winter Birding in Bonn

As my parents live in Bonn in Germany, I have been birding a few times in some spots surrounding the city when visiting them over the last few years, including the Siegaue (riverine and grassy habitats) and the Siebengebirge (mainly forest). At one time I counted over 60 individuals from each goose species from a single spot.

I could imagine that timing the earlier emergence of insect prey at the breeding grounds is particularly problematic for insectivorous species. I spent some time sitting on the lawn and watching an Eurasian Green Woodpecker forage around me. If this wouldn’t be enough, climate change has stark effects on migration patterns.
