Piney Z lake is not large, bisected by a berm that parallels the land-trail as well as a series of fishing earthen fingers that stretch out into the water at regular intervals. Nosing our kayaks between the trunks of bald cypress trees, we watched two Osprey eating fish on their large, stick-filled nest.

This Turkey Vulture was not happy to fall for the same trick that the Black Vulture fell for. I’m just glad that this Roseate Spoonbill kept fishing in roughly the same spot until I could nail the fish in mid-toss! Someone’s ready to get it on! Angry vulture! Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. There was a small house at the north end of the lake that kept a bit of fishing gear, rented some small boats and had a few snacks.

American Kestrels , Osprey , and Turkey Vultures were the predominant birds, with occasional Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper’s Hawk moving as well. We saw far too many Turkey Vultures. New World vultures of the genus Cathartes ( Greater Yellow-headed , Lesser Yellow-headed and Turkey Vultures ) look much alike. The other Cathartes vultures have an incredible sense of smell and are able to find a small dead fish in the thick and seemingly uniform Tropical Rainforest floor.

While I enjoyed the view of alligators and Double-crested Cormorants from the nearby fishing pier, I quickly walked away to distance myself from the blasting country music. Tricolored and Little Blue Herons provided diversity, while an Osprey and group of circling Turkey Vultures were the only shapes that broke the constant blue of the sky.

This Wood Stork was one of ten species of waders that was taking advantage of a pool that must have been teeming with fish and other underwater food sources.
