Leaving Fall River, past the local Bank Swallow nesting site , we head over to Rat Farm Road, a hot spot for raptors, leading to Horr Pond and Big Lake. Back at Fall River Lake a Swamp Sparrow ( Melospiza georgiana ) had been reported hanging out for the past few days, but it had been hunkered down and difficult to find. LUCKY ME !

I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Baird’s Sparrow was one of those elusive creatures.

I was at Baranda fish farm, north of Belgrade, following a short embankment without much hope: swans and ducks at the right hand side and a solar powered screamer at the left, meant to scare cormorants with sounds of shooting, reloading, shooting and bird cries (presumably in agony).

The national park ranges some 100 km in length along the right bank of the Danube (the left bank is in Romania), where the river varies in width from 5 km / 3 mi to only 150 m / 500 ft and the mountains rise up to 800 m / 2600 ft a.s.l. My first ever Gamble’s Quail were feeding right next to the picnic area, and alongside the visitors center building, I spotted a thrasher. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.

This small group of Pronghorn Antelope were right at the refuge entrance. They were such a common bird when I was kid, running around the refuge, driving the old farm truck, when I was a few years shy of the legal driving age. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject! I guess they were the greeters!

I guess another factor to consider is that Costa Rica is small enough for any of these birds to just fly right over the entire country. After starting the morning with an unsuccessful search for Rusty Sparrow in Orotina, we hit three main shorebird sites. No sparrow but the dawn chorus was a treat.

Wetland Halfway between bustling Belgrade and sleepy Zrenjanin, River Tamis floodzone contains abundant oxbow lakes (turned into fish farms) and salt marshes filled with birds. Fish farms in Baranda and neighbouring Sakule villages, about 40 km / half an hour north of Belgrade, offer likely the best wetland birding near the city.

I had been contacted by Bill at Birds & Beans Coffee, a wonderful shade-grown distributor I’d been using for a few years, to help do a breeding bird survey on a local organic farm. Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields.
