As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Different bird families, I know. Though I actually quite like zebras.

We always drive slowly towards the park, because often there are many species to be observed along that road. The big surprise was not just one Nankeen Night-heron sitting on a branch out in the open at 2pm, but a family. It makes for a beautiful environment and often Galahs fly up from the edge of the highway offering even more pink!

We have observed huge flocks of Galahs there on previous visits and other times there are more bird species, but only one or two of each species. Walking out onto the bridge we soon observed a good mixture of other bird species. Brolga had come into drink and there were all three species of Ibis present. Cattle Egret.

We were surprised to observe Zebra Finch , because there did not appear to be any water, but they could have been accessing water on the station and coming to the crater for food. The quarry was being used as a training ground for a family of five Brown Falcons and they were amazing to watch as they used the quarry walls to hunt. The water won’t be there for much longer and all of the water-reliant species will soon have to find another source. An almost dry quarry. White-faced Heron.

I was planning a trip to South Africa, I had about five days to fill, I wanted to get a bunch of desert species (particularly the Springbok – not a bird) in a way that wasn’t too hard to reach from Johannesburg. Arriving at the rest area we added a Red-backed Kingfisher to our notebook closely followed by Diamond Doves , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. It was in fact a White-browed Woodswallow and a species rarely seen in Western Australia. Native Mistletoe and Zebra Finch nest.

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. Beyond the Mutton Hole wetlands we soon stopped to observe a Sarus Crane family feeding near Corduroy Creek and then we encountered more and more Brolga and Sarus Cranes all the way to Karumba. The Brolga does not have the red feathers down is neck, but does have a dewlap to distinguish it from the Sarus Crane. Wetland in Karumba.

Arriving at Bilyuin Pool the first time in May we were soon greeted by a family of Australian Magpies keen to see if we were prepared to hand over anything-NO! Australian Magpie family. Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. She died in a car accident during a birding trip.
