It is common for other members of the giraffe family to become involved with the care of newborns, and this baby will be joined by another new baby giraffe before summer. A giraffe’s gestation period is approximately 15 months, and the new baby will nurse for about one year.

Our bird list was growing quite fast as we approached the park and it included Whistling Kite , Black Kite, Little Corellas , Magpie-lark , Tree Martin , White-necked Heron , Zebra Finch , Crested Pigeon , Willie Wagtail , Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike and a Black-eared Cuckoo perched high up on some sticks.

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000.

The egret family were represented by the Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and a lone Cattle Egret. The highlight of the brief stop was seeing not just Zebra Finch dripping down to drink at the dam, but also Star Finch. There were also Australasian Darters and Little Pied Cormorants. There was also a Black-necked Stork. Cattle Egret.

Generally the large family herds of buffalo are peaceful, but the old bulls (called “dagga” boys, “dagga” being a Zulu word for “mud” since they are often covered with the substance after their long wallows) who have left the herds tend to be furious with life in general and anyone they can smash in particular.

It was very popular with the Rufous-throated Honeyeaters , Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters , Banded Honeyeaters , White-winged Trillers , Little Friarbird s and the Zebra Finch. Zebra Finch. A family group of eight Grey-crowned Babblers bounced around the surrounding trees and dropped to the water to drink.

The quarry was being used as a training ground for a family of five Brown Falcons and they were amazing to watch as they used the quarry walls to hunt. It was surprising therefore to find one White-necked Heron , one White-faced Heron and a Black-fronted Dotterel present. An almost dry quarry. White-faced Heron. Black-fronted Dotterel.

We were surprised to observe Zebra Finch , because there did not appear to be any water, but they could have been accessing water on the station and coming to the crater for food. This was prolific with flowering trees, which were mostly Grevillea refracta and a favourite food for the honeyeater family of birds. Heading around the rim.

It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches. Purple Roller. Some Red-billed Oxpeckers on some big thing.

Arriving at the rest area we added a Red-backed Kingfisher to our notebook closely followed by Diamond Doves , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. The honeyeater family was well represented with Brown Honeyeaters , Singing Honeyeaters , Pied Honeyeaters , Black Honeyeaters , Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters and White-plumed Honeyeaters.

But Gotham’s many parks have some very suitable habitat for birds from the family Picidae and a birder in any borough of New York will generally find at least a couple of species during an average morning’s birding. Disbelief probably seems like the proper response to the idea that there are woodpeckers in New York City.

Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. Crested Pigeons and Diamond Doves flew across the track in search of water and there were also Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. There have been Crimson Chats on the track as well, but they appear to have dispersed now.

There were plenty of passerines among the bushes and trees when we wandered the edge of the lake including Yellow Chats , Jacky Winter , Brown Honeyeater , White-plumed Honeyeater , Singing Honeyeater , Yellow-throated Miner , Zebra Finch , Red-capped Robin , Restless Flycatcher and Spotted Bowerbird.

Arriving at Bilyuin Pool the first time in May we were soon greeted by a family of Australian Magpies keen to see if we were prepared to hand over anything-NO! Australian Magpie family. The edges of the pool were active with Black-fronted Dotterels , Red-kneed Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Zebra Finch coming down to drink.

Beyond the Mutton Hole wetlands we soon stopped to observe a Sarus Crane family feeding near Corduroy Creek and then we encountered more and more Brolga and Sarus Cranes all the way to Karumba. Magpie Geese and Great Egret -Mutton Hole wetlands. One Brolga on the left and three Sarus Crane.

I ended up scoring four lifers: African Dusky Flycatcher , Village Weaver , Whyte Barbet and Zebra Waxbill. In my family, we have a tradition (in place since 1347 when we survived the Black Death) of “ wait over the weekend and see what happens ”. Then I heard a ruckus. Once I got home, I started feeling very sick.

They were the first of many of the finch family that we would observe along the Negri River. Double-barred Finch, Masked Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Zebra Finch and the delightful Gouldian Finch all came down to drink. Rufous-throated Honeyeaters were getting moisture from the long grass and the Zebra Finch were making the most of all of the fresh seed. We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! Our next stop was the Poo Ponds , where there are very few ducks now we have had some rain.
