The ephemeral lakes are struggling to fill up this year and the birds are dispersing in search of water and places to breed. This species was never a regular bird species in Broome at all and was only occasionally observed. Hopefully the next member of the finch or lorikeet family that you see is in the wild!

They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. The benefits are many, including the availability of anthropogenic food sources, breeding boxes and warmer temperatures.

There’s a little hint of white in the malar and throat too, which would seem to be a problem for the species Black- chinned Sparrow. As the old saying goes, “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” This is not an easy bird, but it is expected. New Jersey mystery sparrow.

It is common for other members of the giraffe family to become involved with the care of newborns, and this baby will be joined by another new baby giraffe before summer. These births are part of a successful long-term breeding program at Busch Gardens. The term “reticulated” refers to the giraffe’s net-like pattern of spots.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

But Gotham’s many parks have some very suitable habitat for birds from the family Picidae and a birder in any borough of New York will generally find at least a couple of species during an average morning’s birding. Like many woodpeckers, they are sexually dimorphic, with males showing a red spot on the back of their head.

After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where. We managed to not observe Straw-necked Ibis or Glossy Ibis all day, but had seen both species a week ago! This is exactly why birding is such an interesting pastime. Magpie Geese.
