The ephemeral lakes are struggling to fill up this year and the birds are dispersing in search of water and places to breed. When we returned recently to check on our Tawny Frogmouth nest , which became a Tawny Frogmouth family, we were delighted to hear the sound of Varied Lorikeets as soon as we opened the vehicle doors.

It is common for other members of the giraffe family to become involved with the care of newborns, and this baby will be joined by another new baby giraffe before summer. These births are part of a successful long-term breeding program at Busch Gardens. The term “reticulated” refers to the giraffe’s net-like pattern of spots.

Granted, it’s not always on a scale we can readily appreciate, and we humans are much more attuned to the differences in each other because that’s how we recognize friends, family, and celebrities on the street, but when a bird is even slightly different from the norm, it’s generally the more expected species than the unexpected.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

But Gotham’s many parks have some very suitable habitat for birds from the family Picidae and a birder in any borough of New York will generally find at least a couple of species during an average morning’s birding. Disbelief probably seems like the proper response to the idea that there are woodpeckers in New York City.

Rufous-throated Honeyeaters were getting moisture from the long grass and the Zebra Finch were making the most of all of the fresh seed. We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! Judging by the size of the “knobs” on their heads they are here to breed !
