A good year for Zebra Finch

This year has been different as we have a new visitor-the Zebra Finch. The last time we saw Zebra Finch visit our garden was a pair in 2004 and then suddenly in April this year they appeared in large numbers all around Broome’s coastline and at the Poo Ponds. I went out to sit on the lawn and take some photographs.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes

They are often nearby and breed locally, but we don’t always have them at the water. Here are some Brown Honeyeaters enjoying the water in 2014 and Zebra Finch in 2012 at this location. The only other similar species is the White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike , but it is a much smaller species and the call is quite different.

Birdlife at the Fortescue River

It was our first encounter of Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding and they had found the perfect environment. Last week I told you about our lucky find at the Fortescue River between Nullagine and Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Of course, it was not just perfect for them, but many other birds. Australian Wood Ducks.

Birding Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

The US company NE Pigeon Supplies presumably is involved in supplying materials to keep and breed pigeons. In any case, I wonder whether the female – not quite as colorful as the male, see below – also qualifies as an “aesthetically valuable urban bird species” The third pigeon species around here is the Zebra Dove.

Birding Singapore

If on the other hand you take a zebra, shrink it and attach wings, the punishment may be similar, but the result will not be a Zebra Dove. Finally, the Yellow Bittern is one of my favorite birds in Singapore, and it is much easier to see here than in its breeding grounds in Shanghai.

A new year, new life and new hope….

Rufous-throated Honeyeaters were getting moisture from the long grass and the Zebra Finch were making the most of all of the fresh seed. There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. Black-fronted Dotterel nesting.

According to Tim Low (in “Where Song began”), “so easy were they to breed that by 1859 they cost less to buy in London than in Sydney.” ” Funny how the difficulty of breeding a species can be illustrated in simple monetary terms. Is it offensive to say that Australian Zebra Finches breed like rabbits?
