The third weekend of January, I travelled to the coastal city of Acapulco to give a seminar on family finances at a church there. As if the Chachalaca and Magpie-Jay noises weren’t enough, there were also many pairs of White-fronted Parrots screeching as they flew overhead, though I never managed a photo of those.

This tree is of the coniferous family and this bird has made its life around the southern temperate forest where this tree has been constantly destroyed to clear for farmland development. It seemed like our luck had run out since the parrots went quiet and we could not locate the exact area of their hiding place.

We saw 15 woodpecker species, some, like Campos Flicker, colorful and photographable, some, like Crimson-crested Woodpecker, large and, yes, strikingly crested. We saw a family of three jaguars–mom, dad, and daughter–in the two full days we spent in Porto Jofre.

After we had our scope fill of that one, we ventured into the forest to lay eyes on a family of Spectacled Owls ! They come to fruit right behind the buildings and while you dig the colors, you might also get lucky with Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Golden-olive Woodpecker, White Hawk , and other species (we did). Owned and run by a local family, they treated us very well, even making sure that we had coffee by 4:30 in the morning. Parrots also flew overhead and the nearby forest gave us a few more tanager species, a glimpse of a Slaty-breasted Tinamou , and prolonged views of a tiny, prized Pied Puffbird.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.
