As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve.

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). Cruises are available to go out and spot them, and we took one and after twenty five years of trying to see one of these odd sea mammals we finally did, and actually saw a mother and calf to boot!

Masked Lapwing is a very easy bird to identify, so there is a question about how the Compact Guide works in the field when trying to identify trickier birds, like Honeyeaters, a family totally new to many North American birders. I found it extremely easy to use in the few days I was able to take it out in the field without a guide.

These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.
