The 10-year-old Boa was pregnant and had been raised by McAdam since it was a baby. This is also present in birds & mammals, however it is not fully present in fish & amphibians. Presently I find the sit-and-wait approach much more gratifying. I was saddened when I saw a White-lined Tanager feeding a Shiny Cowbird , but felt relieved a few weeks later when I saw her raising young of her own species. There is an unquantifiable joy one experiences when genuinely surprised. Yup, that’s it.

Some specimens in the hand also presented difficulties. If the bird raises its wings, it’s likely flying – and good luck trying to get a good view of a flying snipe! Any snipe on Tobago would be a Wilson’s Snipe. This all changed a few days ago, when I got a call about a distressed bird in someone’s backyard.

On August 20th we entered the bird hide at about 10am and were noting the birds present and six crocodiles on the far bank when suddenly a large crocodile grabbed one of the Little Black Cormorants that was feeding in a small group in the middle of the billabong.
