Our trip to Botswana produced some great owl species besides the reclusive phantom, including some of the smallest and some of the largest owls in Africa. Our Pel’s experience deep within the heart of the Okavango was unforgettable. What a beauty! The ginger phantom is a phantom no more. What a place.

The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. TRANSPORTATION. All in all, the Radisson Summit delivered what we all wanted.

Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. We arrived at the rather untouristy seasite town of Lahad Datu where our guide dropped us off at the office of the lodge.

My personal list for Safa Park runs to 40+, but upwards of 200 species have been recorded here over the years. Gates are open from 08.00am ’til 10.00pm.
