When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. Over the following weeks the Black-winged Stilt bred in the area and there are now good numbers of juvenile birds right against the main highway. The nest is a shallow depression that is generally lined with vegetation.

Around one kilogram – heavy like a brick, it offered powerful magnification, but somehow never felt right. One bird was flying towards us and, just prior to avoiding us, only slightly raised its head (showing us its yellow throat) before picking up an insect in mid-air.

“We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Two years ago we got a call about an eagle hit by a car. When we arrived we looked and there was our one-eyed eagle, eating a raccoon that had been hit. That was 9 years ago. So gorgeous!

We follow the tire tracks in an off-white, salty soil and then, without a word of warning, our guide/driver turns into the bushes, driving left and right… until one and then another Short-eared Owl flushes in front of us. Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus. The area is overgrown with low, thorny bushes.

The birding at Eilat is so dynamic in so many ways, you can’t just use that easy “gen” to zip over and see a Bar-tailed Lark , that Greater Spotted Eagle that flew overhead, or even the Wryneck hanging out in Eilat’s very own Central Park.
