What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese. There were Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, American Robins , and of course the ever popular Yellow-rumped Warbler.

That will be the opening day of the 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. That means grassy fields are loaded with sparrows, hummocks are filled with wood-warblers, and wetlands teem with waterfowl. Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. This will change.

It was my favorite type of wildlife watching, a real spectacle. The distance made it nearly impossible to capture the action in photographs so I mostly just watched as gulls swarmed, ducks dove, and gannets plunged. Five Field Sparrows in February in Queens is unprecedented for me but that’s how many I counted in that one flock.

I was able to find the Common Redpoll among the flock of Lesser Goldfinches and Savannah Sparrows. I even got a halfway decent photo of it before heading a few miles away to see the American Tree Sparrow and Red-naped Sapsucker. The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Well done Yorkshire Wildlife Trust!

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. I did see a Greater-striped Swallow and a host of Capes – a Cape Sparrow , Cape Canary and best of all a Cape Longclaw. After lunch we headed to Fickland Pan, a small farmstead overlooking a pool of water filled with ducks. The star attraction here is a tiny LBJ, a mouselike-lark called Rudd’s Lark. But we did.
