Unwanted farm dogs are another source. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home. The selling of dogs from the pound for this purpose is morally wrong. The worlds’ first transgenic dog, Ruppy (short for Ruby Puppy), produces a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light. Ruppy and four other beagles are the first dogs to glow, though the experiment has taken place in other animals. Lee was also part of a team that created the first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005.

When we left off , the New York Times' Roger Cohen had eaten dog while in China, and wasn't thrilled about it emotionally. Logically, he admits it does make perfect sense to eat dogs if you eat pigs and cows. However I cannot see a rational argument for saying eating dogs or cats is barbaric while eating pork or beef is fine.

Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. Dogs Sniffing Out Disease. As we know, dogs have a keen sense of smell. More research is needed, but initial studies by the Pine Street Foundation and others on using dogs for diagnosis are promising.

The author isn't advocating that we eat dogs. The author is pointing out the inconsistency of eating cows and not eating dogs (or rather, caring about dogs but not caring about cows). It's morally permissible to eat cows. It's not morally permissible to eat dogs.

My dogs eat vegan dog food. But they also haven't made a moral choice to not use animals. They don't have collars made from animals. To say they are vegans is odd to me, though I have done that as the distinction is lost on most people and for the sake of a swift message it does the job.

Dolphins are so smart that scientists think they should be treated as "non-human persons" and as such it is "morally unacceptable" to use or kill them. The entire discussion, I fear, will be about comparing dolphins to humans and the more human-like they are, the more intelligent they are, and the more worthy of moral consideration they are.

I should think that the trustee of funds willed to a dog or cat is more than a mere custodian of the animal he protects. So far McCloskey is on solid ground, but one can quarrel with his denial that any animals but humans have interests. Rather his job is to look out for the interests of the animal and make sure no one denies it its due.

There's not enough evidence for an accusation of moral relativism, but for me the message is a mixed one. In the end, they can still have their dogs and eat their pigs, without feeling that they are doing anything wrong by favoring one species over another, or taking someone's life when they don't need to.
