Huizaches, Granjenos, and Nopales

10,000 Birds

They do not make good shelter, but their flowers are an important nectar source for Broad-billed and other Hummingbirds, and their juicy fruits attract many of the same species that eat Granjeno fruits. But I definitely prefer to buy them, with those spines already taken off! Orange-crowned Warblers will not eat these fruits.

Afforestation

10,000 Birds

I now protect the lots Huizaches, which shelter self-sown fruiting plants such as Granjenos and Prickly Pears. Afforestation is, at least here in Michoacán, a definite long-term project. Wild Grapes are sprouting in a pot in my yard as I write. The Colorín (Coral Tree) seedlings are doing well this year. It’s a real win-win!

Western Quail-thrush

10,000 Birds

There were a few rubbish bins and a shelter with a picnic table and benches. Returning to the rest area we were soon set up under the shelter with the storm all around us, but mostly raining in the distance and the occasional flurry of wind. The landscape was quite spectacular with the approaching storm as we attempted to outrun it!

Are Women More Compassionate Than Men?

Critter News

All I know is that the majority of vegetarians, ex-vegetarians, animal rights supporters, animal rescuers, animal shelter volunteers, and feral cat colony stewards that I know are women. That doesn't mean that I don't know thoughtful men who think about these issues, just that I've noticed the tendencies are definitely lopsided.
