Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds. Here they were easy to overlook.

The adult Pied Oystercatcher that is sitting on the eggs will lay as flat as possible to protect the eggs. Of course Black Kites also breed and at the moment there is a nest very close to the highway. The adult Black Kites will no doubt find enough roadkill to raise their young. The Whistling Ducks of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. My husband and I zipped up windbreakers and pulled down hats to stay warm as we traversed the raised path, watching Common Gallinules, White-Faced Ibis, and American Coots probe for food along the exposed mud.

Of course, when I get back to the gallery, and I am looking at the shots from the day, I am always impressed with the poise, color and beauty of the bird. The dense prickly cactus aids in protection of the nest, making it very difficult to see in, let alone try to enter.

Speaking of birds in nests, five Chilean Flamingo chicks who were raised by a human “surrogate dad” at a British wildlife center have now graduated to joining the adults in the center’s colony. Of course not! The hope is that their presence while inspire the grown-ups to breeding success.
