Plus, there was once a time when I couldn’t tell a tern from a gull, let alone differentiate between species. I’ve seen Forster’s Terns and Common Terns , but one particular species was fast becoming a nemesis bird: the Black Tern. I adore all protected areas along the barrier islands. It was maddening.

You see, up to this point, let’s say 1972, perhaps 1973, I had never really been exposed to a “Threatened, or Endangered” species of any kind. Even our local Greater Sage Grouse , which now are receiving a huge effort at habitat protection, and restoration, were just those really cool birds out in the desert.

The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. Analyses of stomach content of dead pelicans during a die-off found that their digestive tracts were either empty or contained fish the pelicans don’t normally eat. Pelicans are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

I quelled the urge to jump in the air for joy, as I didn’t want to disturb the birds, but contented myself with a big grin and lots of photos. While protection efforts are underway on the beaches, I am gratified that populations can still survive on non-traditional nesting grounds!
