I did quite a bit of studying the bird species before getting here, unfortunately, the Diamond Marked Babbler was never on my study sheets.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. We were soon in Pasir Ris Town Park and observing a huge variety of birds. Black-naped Oriole.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day. It was a big owl. And this is what we saw.

The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species. They perched atop electric poles, on fences, and even on roofs of nearby farm buildings (Point Reyes allows cattle farming), and I soon lost count of how many large raptors we had seen. A few days ago, I saw a Yellow Bittern trapped in a fishing device. It is interesting to see the different evolutionary strategies of closely related bird species – the various snow-white egrets with their “I don`t give a damn who can see me” attitude contrasting with the ridiculously well-camouflaged yellow bitterns.
