Definitively the Egyptians!

That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city. Too far for a clear camera shot, but most definitively the Egyptian Vultures. My first ever Balkan Egyptian Vultures!

Whiskered Terns and locusts

Attempting a photograph of the cattle beside the highway was pointless, because you only got photographs of locusts! The bird-life has definitely benefitted by the recent outbreak of locusts. Recently the highway has been covered in locusts and you can’t avoid them. The recent swarms of locusts.

Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. Discovering this breeding colony of Yellow-billed Spoonbills was definitely the highlight of our walk. Adult breeding plumage in Yellow-billed Spoonbills.

The return of the Old Man

On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). It may not be beautiful, but it’s a bird with definite charisma. La Barca de Vejer is close to the Barbate river, and the nearby Barbate Marismas provide feeding areas for the ibises.

Birding Lake Kerkini, Greece: Three Lazy Days

Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills.

“Caged” Egrets and Little Black Cormorants

Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in. These Egrets and Little Black Cormorants are definitely using this structure to their advantage. Another significant flock of birds were to be found “caged” in!
