Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds. On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). It may not be beautiful, but it’s a bird with definite charisma.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects.
