It is always hot in Kununurra and you can easily observe many of the bird species around town from your air-conditioned vehicle. Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. The Grey-Streaked Flycatcher looks only marginally more interesting, and while the Latin species name griseisticta sounds vaguely mysterious, it only means grey-spotted. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.

The definition of a borrow pit is rather odd, because you are not actually borrowing anything. It is often a lot hotter there than closer to the coast and many bird species roost in the area or come in for a drink and bathe during the day. The borrow pit has one deep section of water and it is popular with Australasian Grebes.

I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! This species is still uncommon in the Balkans and despite the recent spread, Kalamas is the most reliable site for it in Greece (and this made my only second ever observation of them in Europe). And I know I am in Heaven.

This Cattle Egret has just read a paper stating that it would be 3.6 End of side note. To female readers then: the Pheasant-tailed Jacana. No wonder it looks a bit pissed off.

Bad developments indeed, particularly as the White-backed Vulture was found to be a good avian biomonitor species – if it does badly, most likely the environment as a whole will do badly, too. I could immediately tell them it was an Egyptian Goose – an invasive species in Germany but not at Kruger.

This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. It is impressive and is very hard to show the extent of the whole crater, but we were definitely not disappointed! Stood on the rim. Dragon on the rim. Mulla mulla.
