That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city. Too far for a clear camera shot, but most definitively the Egyptian Vultures. My first ever Balkan Egyptian Vultures!

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” ” The definition of the word CONSERVATION is “the act or an instance of conserving or keeping from change, loss, or injury.” It is obvious that hunting is NOT conservation.

Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). It may not be beautiful, but it’s a bird with definite charisma.

For example, this study showed that Malachite Kingfishers spent more time hunting in locations with more fish. ” (HBW).

I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! My definition of Heaven clearly involves a place hot as Hell, but with so many birds one has to shovel them away to clear the path. Could they possibly be…? A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people.

Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations.
