The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. Off the coast of northern California, Sooty Shearwater are common and are seen on virtually all pelagic birding trips. I just happened to be there to experience it. Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding.

Both falconers and wildlife rehabilitators have to study, gain experience, and jump through various hoops in order to get their licenses. For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California. But in many states, any idiot with 20 bucks can get a permit to own a non-native, captive-bred bird of prey.

A Rose-throated Becard seemed even more interested in watching me than I was in watching it, which was an unusual experience. Kind of like my eyebrows are becoming.). A very rare find in Northern California. For the past several years I have been taking advantage of our many National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) here in Northern California. In September of 2013 there was an Eastern Kingbird ( Tyrannus tyrannus ) seen in Redding, California, less than 30 miles from my home. This was a no-brainer.
