The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. Our agave flower stalk had three species of hummingbird drinking nectar, dive-bombing and stabbing each other: Blue-throated Mountain-gem, Lucifer Hummingbird and Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Our main goal here was the Maroon-fronted Parrot. It was amazing.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter. For example, the Diamond Dove is the world’s second-smallest species of the columbidae order ( source ). The Red-rumped Parrot is a ground-feeding parrot – one of its other names is grass parrot.

Orange-winged Parrots may be abundant elsewhere, but here their presence is wholly overshadowed by a tremendous mixed flock of Crested Oropendola and Yellow-rumped Cacique. One step away from swifts are hummingbirds, and at least 13 species of these winged jewels flutter about from sunrise to sunset. Interesting.

The Latin species name alphonsiana refers to Prof. Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900), a director to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, whose study of bird fossils led to the discovery of tropical birds such as trogons and parrots from prehistoric France. We discovered that they are actually breeding at the base of a tree that hangs down into the water on the left in the photos above. Whilst we were there we had Rainbow Bee-eaters , Willie Wagtails , Paperbark Flycatcher , Pied Butcherbirds , Red-winged Parrots and a White-faced Heron use it. Great Bowerbird bower.

In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. The ABA Checklist Committee quickly followed suit.
