The Cry of the Curlew

Here in the Brecks – an area of poor, sandy soils on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk – we have a small but important breeding population. They favour the old heaths, but a number of pairs also breed on farmland. Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve holds the highest density of nesting Curlews in the Brecks.

In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. Of which you will be reading soon.

In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. Irv Bell's farm is a family farm. It's also a factory farm. And all of those are implicit in "farm."

Shanghai birds in April

On the other hand, in April, some other species start breeding here in Shanghai. Nearby, two Grey-headed Lapwings have apparently decided to stay in Shanghai and start preparations for breeding. The Whimbrels do not join their smaller relatives on the sod farm but prepare to stay at the seaside. Maybe the birds know something.

Birding Shanghai in May

May is also a good time for herons and egrets, as they are in their full breeding plumage. Little Curlews are passing through Shanghai for a short time, taking the local sod farm as a surrogate for tundra. Lesser Coucal breeds in Nanhui, coastal Shanghai. I guess you can see why. Chinese Pond Heron. Great Egret.
