There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. Driving through dairy country we soon added Australian Wood Duck , Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal , Grey Fantail , Wedge-tailed Eagle , Laughing Kookaburra , Eastern Rosella and Superb Fairy-wren to the 2020 Year List. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands.

The heat of the day encouraged the Australian Pelicans to rise up into the thermals and we understand that they spend time between the lake systems at Currawinya and Lake Bindegolly National Parks. Lesser Whistling Duck were flying around, and a Black-naped Oriole provided a nice flash of colour. Both are common, really common, and both are essentially indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. Next we drove to the local bird breeding centre.

The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July. The Grey-headed Lapwing- Vanellus cinereus breeds in north-east China and Japan between April and June and then migrate to spend the winter in northern Southeast Asia from northeastern India to Cambodia and southern Japan.
