A federal government decision to allow a Wyoming tribe to kill two bald eagles for a religious ceremony is a victory for American Indian sovereignty as well as for long-suppressed religious freedoms, the tribe says. The Northern Arapaho share the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

And, let me tell you, it was an amazing trip with gorgeous scenery, lots of cool mammals, and, of course, a whole big bunch of birds! This Pine Grosbeak was just one of the cool birds that came in to take advantage of the feeder. The birds weren’t high on the agenda while we were in Wyoming but I still managed to see some.

Only several dozen of these swans wintered in the region (the region being, approximately, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming) and for some reason they were almost all at this river in this year, and on this day, they were right there in view. The Barn Swallow ( Hirundo rustica ) is one of the most widespread and popular birds. They are still among the coolest birds on my list. Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. One of the birds I will focus on this summer is one of my favorites even though they can be difficult to reach. The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the road and at rest stops along the way.
