17-Year Cicadas and a Mississippi Kite in Staten Island

Back in 1979 New York State birders were pleased with the first record of Mississippi Kites in the state when two visited Staten Island and spent nearly two weeks fattening up on the periodical cicadas that emerged in great numbers that year. Though Jeff is off to Brazil I am sure that nothing he sees there will match the cicada experience.

As reported by the fine folks at The Dodo , after Hurricane Katrina forced Katrina “Kasia” Perkowska to evacuate, she started bringing her pet Wood Duck , Scooter, to her mother-in-law’s nursing home in Mississippi. Sounds like a win-win.
