It is hot and the heat haze is bad not long after sunrise, so not ideal for photography, but great for observing large numbers of birds. The American White Pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ) is a huge bird! Large flocks of these amazing birds are sometimes seen gracefully flying overhead in formation or soaring high on thermals. I did see several American White Pelicans though, including this immature bird (click on photos for full sized images).

There should be thousands of birds at this time of the year, Dimitris Michalakis from the Karla Lake management authority told me. In the northern section, the water was deep, interspersed by reed-islets, but the only birds were a few Little Egrets and Black-headed Gulls. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans. The birds around the spot that we camp were very active and typically noisy. Great Egret , White-faced Heron , Little Egret , Black-fronted Dotterel , Black-winged Stilt , Masked Lapwings , Australian Pelican , Common Greenshank , Common Sandpiper , Wood Sandpiper , Grey Teal and a Nankeen Night-heron on dusk after the rain.

I dipped a bird recently – possibly a lifer. First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time. I opt for the bird richest section of the lake, visible from the eastern dyke. What to say?

As you can see there are now areas for birds to land in front of where we camp. The birds never appear concerned about the crocodiles and wander very close to them, especially if there is food in the shallow water. We had several birds drop in right in front of us during the afternoon. New water level of the Fitzroy River.

Yesterday, Sunday, 20 December, was the 2015 Queens County Christmas Bird Count. With the mild weather we had been experiencing we had high hopes for some good birds and we were not disappointed. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.

On arrival at the train station at East Hills you are soon on the water’s edge of the Georges River and there are plenty of birds in the surrounding bush as well as on the water. Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

Our recent camping and birding adventure that took us along the remote Duncan Road saw us stopping at the Negri River for an extended period. The Negri River was still flowing, but not over the causeway and offered great birding due to the lack of water everywhere except at this water source. Australian White Ibis and Radjah Shelduck.

Travelling with just a four-wheel drive we are able to get away from the crowds and especially those towing large caravans and we could position ourselves with excellent views of Lake Corella and watch the birds from our grassy patch by the water. Our recent birding and camping trip along the Duncan Road included some extended exploring at the Behn River, which is 63 kilometres down the Duncan Road from the Victoria Highway in the Northern Territory. That’s how I felt about birding at T.H. We walked completely surrounded by birds, and I loved it. Overhead soared a Bald Eagle , Great Blue Heron , and Osprey; in the pines twittered Carolina Chickadees, Brown-headed Nuthatches , and Tufted Titmice. Brown Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants flew near the surface.
