I spent this past weekend in Saugerties at my folks’ house in order to look for Easter eggs, let Desi enjoy time with his cousins, and generally have a good ol’ time with family. Whilst many communal nesting birds (including cormorants, herons and ibis) use the rookery, the most obvious and spectacular are the Painted Storks , M ycteria leucocephala. The storks begin to arrive from August and will usually be sitting on eggs by October. There can be quite a gap between the early birds and the late brooders.

I am not actually really sure whether I like the sight of the male Mandarin Duck. On the one hand, it obviously is a splendidly dressed bird in a multitude of expressive colors. It is not quite clear to me whether the Mandarin Duck is endangered or not. One thing that helps the duck is that apparently, it tastes rather bad.

He then takes all the dead mosquitos and puts them on a tray feeder for his feeder birds to eat. This year, his groundskeeper texted to tell me that a bird made a nest in it and it wasn’t working. These birds are known for building more than one nest in their territory and the ones here go for it gusto.

Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests.

After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. This year has been very wet and the local birds have taken advantage of the situation. Not only have the Magpie-larks been busy building their mud nests and the Tawny Frogmouths been breeding at the supermarket car park, but other birds arrived and started to breed. It eventually warms up but in the meantime, it’s good birding anyways. “Good” in this case means lots of birds on the move. Here in Broome we observe a good selection of ducks and the most prolific at the Broome Poo Ponds is usually the Plumed Whistling-Duck. One of our favourite ducks is the Pink-eared Duck. Pacific Black Ducks lay up to 16 eggs and sometimes two clutches are raised in a year.
