However, I visited the same site again to see the bird, and was surprised with two unexpected sightings. I was impressed how the bird was found it as it was incredibly well camoulaged.

That is very cold for the south of Germany. This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. A few dead birds were collected by authorities and sent to a laboratory for investigation.

So, this post just shows 25 birds I spotted at Nanhui (coastal Shanghai) in October 2019. One of the birds seemed somewhat incompetent in handling the seeds of the local trees. Always interesting to see the same species both in Germany (in my parents’ garden) and in Shanghai. After a few days, they left again.

Birds & birding were definitely the last thing on my mind. Due to its large range and population size, it is rated by the IUCN as being a species of Least Concern. Germany currently has a population of around 500 breeding pairs, which is a significant improvement over the 50 pairs left in the early 1970s.

You see, the Great (White) Heron/Egret is a polytypic species with four subspecies: alba in Europe, egretta in the Americas, melanorhynchos in Africa, and modesta in Asia and Oceania. Modesta should be considerably smaller than alba , which the gaudily-coloured birds are not. Just so you know. Which sounds fine.

Within its European range, it was heavily hunted until the late 19th century, and the Mute Swan was subsequently a very rare bird to encounter in the wild.
