The usual way to find an owl would be to listen to its territorial call in the breeding season (to listen and not to lure it – I oppose the playback ), but this species is even less vocal than most other owls. The bird tolerated us for perhaps a dozen seconds before it majestically took off. Absolutely thrilled!

Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. They emerged from their bloody rampage leaving fifteen adults dead, and fifteen destroyed nests with either smashed or missing eggs. Gutierrez was 18.

This is our thirteenth year of observing Pied Oystercatchers breed along the coast near Broome and it gets easier every year! They always nest from the end of June and they always nest in the same place or within a few metres if there is disturbance around the breeding territory. They are so predictable!

Fortunately, just like when we visited Washington State , Daisy was amenable to taking a boat ride to see some puffins so on the evening of Saturday, 27 May, we (me, Daisy, Desi, and my mother-in-law) found ourselves on a boat in New Harbor watching Black Guillemots swim in the harbor while we waited for our boat to head out to Eastern Egg Rock.

I have observed Pied Oystercatchers breeding in an area on Cable Beach since July 2000. The birds have moved the nest site slightly each year depending on human interaction, but it is still confined to one small section of grey rocky outcrops with a great view for sitting for 28 days.
