October can be a fantastic birding season in the right places. My weekend was actually pretty slow from a wildlife appreciation angle, but the bare husks of coneflowers in my garden are still drawing curious American Goldfinches. Corey spent his weekend upstate visiting his folks, picking apples, and, of course, looking for birds.

Since it’s really hard to type in a splint, here is a blast from the past: specifically from the beginning of this long, strange trip, my cross-country journey from New York to Montana: I have to confess, I had forgotten all about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I wasn’t thinking about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow at all, though.

Lots of birds, a lot of really cool birds! However, as with many other places throughout the globe, this small country also has its fair share of urban wildlife. Our birding was particularly productive for the Central Valley but still gives an idea of what can be found in and near urban areas of Costa Rica.

Sometimes bird rehabbers who end up with tiny, semi-feathered little mystery birds end up playing a game called “Name That Bird.”. Hence: Name That Bird. They’re a blast!

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. Here is a shot of our 5th wheel in the campground, as it were.
