A quick study as I researched this post revealed that fully 37 Arizonan “specialties” are common birds right here where I live. Look in the right place, and year-round you can also find Violet-crowned and Rivoli’s Hummingbirds , Blue-throated Mountain-Gems , and Plain-capped Starthroats here. But this one did.

I saw this at Bear River Migratory Refuge in Utah. This also might be a way to compromise with swallows who try to build right over your home’s doorway. This rookery also housed nesting Barn Owls (not the bird box on the lower half of the pole on the far right). Give them their own platform elsewhere in the yard.

In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

The most exciting of these is the Mantanani Scops Owl, a species named for the island but the majority of whose range is actually the Philippine island of Palawan. So, I could capture it in all its owlish glory, complete with fake eyes at the back and nicely illustrating the capability of the owl to turn its head by almost 180 degrees in each direction. They earn the annual avian medal of honor because they fly to Costa Rica from as far as Alaska and other places where Snowy Owls roam. The conditions in rice fields have to be just right to host them and thankfully, they were when I was in their neighborhood in November.
