I was not tremendously optimistic as I returned to Forest Park for a second shot at the Northern Saw-whet Owl that our beloved host Corey had tipped me off to back at the beginning of January. I picked out a Red-tailed Hawk bearing a squirrel away to a perch to eat, and got a sharp, crisp view of the messy dismemberment despite the gloom.

Our campsite was gorgeous North Lake State Park in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, where the air is crisp, the forests are largely intact, and the bears force you to be careful about leaving food out when you go to sleep. The most exciting of these is the Mantanani Scops Owl, a species named for the island but the majority of whose range is actually the Philippine island of Palawan. This critically endangered seabird is not an easy tick, but this site is fairly reliable for them, which, along with the owl, make this place an attractive draw for birders.

I saw this at Bear River Migratory Refuge in Utah. This rookery also housed nesting Barn Owls (not the bird box on the lower half of the pole on the far right). I didn’t think they were as agile as a wood duck, but apparently they can. This is one of my favorite nesting ideas I’ve come across in my travels.

My possible birdwatching highlight this month was Short-eared Owl at Fengxian. eBird seems to be critical of this species’ work ethics, stating that “it flies lazily over open fields or marshes” Maybe the owl is just sleepy, not lazy. The Red-throated Loon does not fit this archetype.

Larger feathers consist of a shaft (rachis) bearing branches (barbs) which bear smaller branches (barbules). These smaller branches bear tiny hook-bearing processes (barbicels) which interlock with the barbules of an adjacent barb to link the barbs into a continuous stiff vane.
