There is a variation in the plumage of Australian Magpies across Australia and as such they looked different in Victoria. Whenever I walked from Foster to Fish Creek or Foster to Toora I encountered several family groups of Australian Magpies. Late last year I mentioned the presence of Australian Magpies around Broome.

Apostlebirds- Struthidea cinerea have an isolated population in the Northern Territory which is quite separate from the population that runs down the east coast of Australia and can readily be seen in the town of Katherine and further afield. Grey Jumper, Happy Family, Lousy Jack and Twelve Apostles are names that can refer to them.

If there’s one group of birds that just won’t let you be miserable it would have to be the Grey-crowned Babbler. They are usually in a group and our garden regularly has a family group of eight visit it. Birding Australia Babblers Broome' but still continue to chatter as they go about their daily life.

The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. There had been good rains the previous year and as a result of that there were numerous family groups. Emu family on the other side of the fence.

We had last experienced this cheerful family of birds in Katherine in the Northern Territory over 13 years ago, so although the population is isolated there they had the same characteristics. They roam in family groups varying from eight birds upwards and have a certain confidence about themselves as they strut around the bush.

The Red-capped Plover family group will move back and forth up and down the beach as the tides rise and fall and try to avoid the vehicles that use our local beaches at this time of year. Ideally vehicle use is below the high tide mark and then the shorebirds can nest without having their nests run over.

Called home to the Oregon Coast to operate the family motel, in her free time she leads Tufted Puffin walks and escapes to guide at birding festivals and explore the world as often as possible. To me, their silhouette looks like a large shorebird or miniature Ostrich, they are good-sized birds with thin necks and legs and large heads.

I had been told that every year a few stick around, and guess this was that group, since I have not seen a one before or since this beach. This was the first of many Magpie Geese families that we were to come across. Magpie Goose family-two adults. There were several family groups that included three adult birds, so we presume that these were male Magpie Geese that had two partners. Magpie Goose family-three adults.

Once the family of Pied Oystercatchers get to the reef they are easily able to hide the chicks and it does not take you long to become familiar with the communication between the adults and young. They are still grouped together with their parents and there is a short “peep” as I approach.

While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. If you come across a group on the ground foraging for food, look around and you will find one bird sitting in a vantage point, ready to give the alarm call in case of any danger.

Our most recent encounter of an Australian Painted Snipe family was four birds that we accidentally flushed from under the shade of a bush near an ephemeral lake. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore. Four eggs in the Australian Painted Snipe nest.

Purple Swamphen at Herdsman Lake, Perth, Western Australia On our trip to Tasmania we discovered a Purple Swamphen with a chick, so we knew they’d been up to something. We had a family group at Olympic Park and they were not at all bothered by our presence and I was able to take some nice photographs.

Galahs and Red-tailed Black Cockatoos called noisily overhead and the honeyeater family were represented by Brown Honeyeaters, Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters and Rufous-throated Honeyeaters. We observed a Grey-crowned Babbler flying out of a Boab tree and soon realised that it had come out of a roost where the family group will gather.

There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. We were able to observe birds nesting as well as a variety of age groups among the trees. Common Sandpiper. There are White-bellied Sea Eagles in the area and it is likely their nest. Monk Parakeet.

We have recently come across several Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles families around Broome. They are often in large groups in these areas when they are not breeding. They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days.

Channel-billed Cuckoos have now left the Broome area and have headed north, but are the largest of the cuckoo family to visit the Broome area. Pheasant Coucals are also a member of the cuckoo family, but are unique because they do actually raise their own young. The Eastern Koel has only been recorded in Broome on very rare occasions.

The Double-barred Finches continued to visit and they still do in family groups daily. You can easily see Long-tailed Finches at the ephemeral lakes surrounding Broome on most visits, but it would appear that the population that had lived on the outskirts of Broome had dispersed and no longer required the water we provided.

Those that had stayed had bred, though and there are a few family groups. Stay outside the fence! Previously we had hundreds of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , but the remaining ducks were very few.
