While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. If you come across a group on the ground foraging for food, look around and you will find one bird sitting in a vantage point, ready to give the alarm call in case of any danger.

Science and Conservation , the second section, presents two-page summaries of the diverse research being done around the world about penguins. An interesting way of presenting images resulting from a group project; one that makes us think about the subject rather than the creator. I like it, but I also feel frustrated by it.

Then I spotted an easy and obvious one, the Black-eared Wheatear , while the group climbing the steep hillside found the Rock Nuthatch , as well as the Rock Sparrow , striped, pale and indescribable. Clare went a chose a first for Australia. I love participating in citizen science! And a lifer for me – if I manage to see it!
