We had not encountered a sea snake in a knot before and according to this article the sea snakes need to knot themselves frequently to get rid of parasites and to shed their skins every couple of weeks. They could hide in the rocks and get protected from rain or the heat of the day, but we continued north with our umbrella!

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

There is a small resident population in Polk County, Florida, in the middle of the peninsula, mostly on protected land, and once in a while they show up in a place where they can be easily observed. Whooping Crane is not listed as a “sensitive species” for Florida, and there are reports for other locations in the area.

The ongoing destruction of Nanhui, where the species can frequently be seen on migration, certainly will not help. Judging from the facial expression of this White-shouldered Starling , I would rather not have an annoyed bird of this species as a roommate. The species has reversed sex roles, with the males doing the incubating.
