The New York Times presents us, this morning, with "Equine Alternative" regarding the recent discovery that horses decided to allow themselves be domesticated by humans for our mutual benefit, earlier than we had thought (3500 BC, and we preciously thought it was more like 2500 BC). And that fact gives rise to a thought-experiment.

So we made our way to the grounds of the Uganda Wildlife Education Center , a former zoo that now rehabilitates injured animals. Rare birds are weird, and a bird as rare as a first country record is a special experience. On the shore of Lake Victoria, the grounds were surprisingly birdy, and we quickly built up a nice checklist.

Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. This is where I'm confused.

I'm saying that, if we do put them to death, we shouldn't call it euthanasia, for that implies something false, namely, that the killing is done for the sake of the animal. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia.

There are owls in New York City. They are the city’s latest, maybe only, celebrity media sensation, and photographs show crowds of New Yorkers craning their necks up as far as their masks allow, holding phones at arm’s length, using opera glasses and huge binoculars that remind me of the ones my dad used at the racetrack.

Species that back here in New York either don’t occur or only occur in winter and that necessitate a drive far to the north of New York City were common in the backyard in Breckenridge. My worries were unfounded but I must say it is an interesting experience to have foxes begging by the table.

While growing up in western New York during the 70s and 80s, sure, we could have found some information, some illustrations of toucans at the local public library. When aracaris go after young birds and other small animals, I can’t help but think of miniature velociraptors. Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus).

I went back to New York to the areas where I grew up and went to college and graduate school for a five-day weekend. As someone who's about to have a one-year old in her life, I was particularly aware of the part animals play in the lives of the children and how animals are talked about. That makes sense to me.

The answer is "Yes."

No doubt the National Parks are aware of the situation, but it is also hard to deal with feral animals in remote areas. They were the first town in Australia and third in the world (after New York and Paris) to produce Hydro-electric power for street lighting… not that there are a whole lot of streets! Feral pigs.
