These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. Our time on the island was spent looking at birds, exploring, picnicking, throwing rocks in the water, and admiring a very cooperative Santa Cruz Island Fox. Then the birds showed. Last month I accompanied Seagull Steve to South Florida for two weeks, which yielded some excellent birds…we missed the Fork-tailed Flycatcher on Big Pine Key, but that’s because we were on the Dry Tortugas, so we aren’t complaining.

Common Nightingales were singing, a squadron of Dalmatian Pelicans was in the air and everything was exactly where it should be, including myself. A dam on a station can be the only water supply for many birds and animals and is always worth stopping and checking out. It was over 41c (106f) when we pulled over at the dam close to the highway a few kilometres west of the rest area and it was indeed a popular spot for birds. Australian Pelicans and Great Egret.

WARNING:- This post shows animal predation… Whenever we go north from Broome we stop in at Parry’s Nature Reserve and visit Marlgu Billabong. We still observed 45 species of birds in the reserve in about an hour and there are always raptors to observe as well as the usual water birds.

But there was one trip I wasn’t going to miss, a midweek excursion by the Cumberland Bird Observers Club , the people to go out with in Sydney if you want birds. We have just been away camping and birding and had an amazing time. It is only a short drive in over a small hill to the bird hide at the billabong. Last month we decided to head north to go camping and birding and top up the 2018 Year List. It is now very hot and dry inland and the temperature does not drop much at night, so you go to bed early and get up early like the animals and birds. Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.
