The very excited response was that she had been banded as a fledgling in 1983, which made her, at 27 years and 9 months of age, the second oldest living wild Red-tailed hawk ever recovered in all of North America. She was rescued, put back into her crate, and returned to the Raptor Trust. This filled me with both glee and dismay.

August arrived and I was releasing birds knowing they’d need time to adapt prior to making that long flight across the Gulf of Mexico, headed to South America. She’d sit and watch for hours as the other flycatchers swooped back and forth from their perches, grabbing the mealworms and superworms I’d throw into the air.

As a result of human interference, four Chimney Swift nestlings had to be rescued. In late summer, wild swifts will congregate in large numbers in a single roost as they begin staging for their coming migration all the way to the Amazon Basin in South America.

Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses have a new home, and a life of luxury at the ARK 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County. The ADI rescue operation was backed by Bob Barker. ADI also rescues animals in distress worldwide.

In most of North America, winter is finch time. Like many mountain birds, Gray-crowned Rosy Finches are said to show little fear of humans, so hopefully all the hustle and bustle will only be in my favor as rescue will be on hand if I run out of oxygen or fall down. I could hope to pick up some other birds, as well.
