We were first greeted by a pair of noisy Burrowing Parrots perched on a Cactus announcing our arrival. Burrowing Parrots. Two out-of-place parrots and a lost shorebird. The Nanday Parakeet , native to South America, was first observed in Florida in 1973. They are quite charming parrots, mostly green with a black facial mask and beak, red feathers around the thighs, a bluish tint to the chest, and blue edging the tail. The answer? Petersburg.

Well, that tells a lot about me: it’s a 40l plane carry-on type (which I will carry on as my day-pack, too). I miss the tropics.

The question is why these natives of rural areas in southern South America (east of the Andes) have been so spectacularly successful in establishing their colonies. Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest. There are a lot of pet psittacines out there that escape or are released. And cell towers.

The afternoon birds also included Capped Heron , Mealy Parrot , Drab Water Tyrant , Amazonian Tyrannulet , Green-tailed Jacamar and more than 40 Sand-colored Nighthawks. Located within a Puinave indigenous reserve, these remnants of ancient parent-rock are some of the oldest geological formations in all of South America.

As if the Chachalaca and Magpie-Jay noises weren’t enough, there were also many pairs of White-fronted Parrots screeching as they flew overhead, though I never managed a photo of those. In other words, I travelled, sometimes every weekend.

While green is rather common color in avian plumage, it rarely attains the flamboyance of a parrot’s chartreuse or the emerald of a hummingbird.
